A Political Statement at Art Basel Miami Beach

important work by Mexican textile artist Margarita Cabrera,  which was on view in Jane Lombard Gallery’s booth at Art Basel Miami Beach.

At the fair Cabrera debuts three of her signature cacti sculptures made from U.S. Border Patrol uniform fabric and copper wire set in a terracotta pot. These materials carry deep significance and speak directly to the themes that define her practice. Each work begins with the title Space in Between followed by the initials of the undocumented collaborators who helped create it. Their initials J.S., N.P., and S.P. become part of the sculpture itself. Cabrera protects their identities while honoring their participation which gives the works a powerful sense of lived experience and shared authorship. The sculptures hold layers of meaning tied to the border region as well as ideas of reclamation and resilience.
