Hong Kong — Following a successful New York Asia Week at Bonhams’ new U.S. flagship headquarters, which achieved US$12.5 million across six live auctions with strong participation from collectors across Asia Pacific, Bonhams continues to develop its Chinese Works of Art team in Hong Kong with the appointment of Gordon Lo as Senior Specialist. He will work alongside Senior Specialist Amethyst Chau as part of the global team led by Asaph Hyman, Global Head of Chinese Ceramics & Works of Art. Together, Gordon and Amethyst will focus on driving consignments, deepening client relationships and supporting Bonhams’ continued growth across the region.

The appointment follows a strong year in 2025 for Bonhams’ Chinese Works of Art and Himalayan Art, with market-leading results in the UK and Europe and significant prices achieved internationally. Asian collectors continue to lead demand, while the region remains a key source of works with impeccable provenance and important private collections. Notable examples include An Important Massive Imperial Gilt Copper-Alloy Figure of Longnü(1641), sold for HK$27 million to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the sale of the Dr. & Mrs. Hu Shih-Chang Collection of Chinese Art in 2025.

Asaph Hyman, Global Head of Chinese Ceramics & Works of Art, commented: “I amdelighted to welcome Gordon Lo to our global Chinese Ceramics & Works of Art team. With such a dynamic team in Hong Kong, including Amethyst Chau and Tracy Hui, I truly look forward to continued growth and to delivering exciting sales and objects to the Chinese art market.”

Gordon Lo brings a global perspective, robust client networks, and rigorous research expertise to the team. Most recently, he served as Head of Sale and Auctioneer for the Chinese Works of Art department at Sotheby’s London. Gordon was instrumental in several high-profile Chinese Art auctions in recent years, including the legendary collections of Sir Joseph Hotung and Dr. Wou Kiuan. Notably, in 2024, he played a pivotal role in a landmark sale that achieved the highest price for a Chinese work of art sold at auction globally that year.

Amethyst Chau possesses over 15 years of experience in Chinese antiques and auctions. Most recently, she served as Specialist at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, where she built longstanding relationships with collectors, trade professionals, and institutions across Asia and beyond. She was instrumental in the sale of numerous record-breaking masterpieces and distinguished private collections, including the Poon Family Collection, the Cissy and Robert Tang Collection of Chinese Jades, and the Water Pine and Stone Retreat Collection, reflecting her deep expertise in porcelain, jade, imperial works of art, and scholarly objects.

Building on this momentum, Bonhams will present Chinese Works of Art sales in Hong Kong and London in May 2026 as part of its continued global programme. The calendar is outlined below, with further details to be announced in due course.
