LLONDON – 9 SEPTEMBER 2025 – Phillips will present David Hockney, the fourth auction devoted exclusively to the celebrated British master, on 18 September in London, featuring 38 lots. This sale precedes the Evening & Day Editions sale on 18 – 19 September, spotlighting special groups of works by iconic artists Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, and REVEALED: Important Works by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The latter follows a “white-glove” performance of other works from the REVEALED collection in Phillips London’s Modern & Contemporary Art auction in June. Concurrently, An Eye For Editions, From Rembrandt To Mehretu – The Frans Oomen Collection will run as an online auction from 12 – 23 September.
“Our Hockney auctions have proven to be unparalleled in their ability to connect collectors with some of the artist’s most innovative works,” said Robert Kennan, Head of Editions, Europe. “With an extraordinary sell-through rate of 98% across our past three sales, 65 world auction records achieved, and nearly a third of buyers under the age of 40, Phillips has established itself as the destination for Hockney at auction. This year marks an historic moment of institutional recognition for Hockney, as the Fondation Louis Vuitton staged David Hockney 25, the largest retrospective of the artist’s career to date. We are so excited to unveil our preview to the public on 12 September.”
From L to R: DAVID HOCKNEY Kaisarion and All His Beauty, 1961 Estimate: £7,000-10,000, DAVID HOCKNEY Number One Chair, from Moving Focus, 1985-86 Estimate: £20,000-30,000
Highlights include Untitled (577) (Two Robes), 2010. One of Hockney’s pioneering iPad drawings, the work captures a quiet domestic intimacy, depicting the artist’s home with extraordinary sensitivity and detail. A personal portrait without people, the composition invites the viewer into Hockney’s private world, offering a rare glimpse into the personal environment of one of Britain’s most celebrated living artists.
The Evening & Day Editions auction features exceptional works by Andy Warhol, including one of his most iconic images, Details of Renaissance Paintings (Sandro Botticelli, Birth of Venus, 1482). This unique colourway renders the breathtaking Venus in rosy pinks and a vibrant turquoise. Created in 1984, this rare trial proof offers bidders a chance to acquire a timeless Warhol-classic, revivifying an icon of the past in signature Pop style.
Phillips also celebrates the works of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, amassed over several years by a single owner, presenting the powerful pair’s prints, collages and wrapped objects. Famous for their fleeting, monumental public installations that resisted conventions of the art market, this selection of works highlights the cornerstones of the artists’ practice: transient, philosophical, and unforgettable.
AN EYE FOR EDITIONS, FROM REMBRANDT – THE FRANS OOMEN COLLECTION: OOMEN AUCTION
Built over forty years, the collection of Frans Oomen is defined, in his words, by the tension between vulnerability and strength. Oomen’s curious drive has led to the acquisition of works by pioneering contemporary artists, driven by his immediate emotional reaction to their artworks. From Rembrandt to Ai Weiwei, our online sale is a treasure-trove of multiples desirable to both first-time buyers and seasoned collectors.
